چکیده

Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs) is an electrophysiologic technique that represents the synchronized activity of the brainstem and the auditory nerve. Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) is part of electrodiagnostic procedures that help in evaluating the type and degree of abnormalities of the peripheral nerves. The aim of our study was to assess whether central or peripheral nerves are involved in hypertensive patients. 20 patients of primary hypertension were selected between the ages of 40-60 years of either sex along with 20 ageand sex-matched normotensives. ABRs along with NCV, both sensory and motor components of the median nerve were performed using standard techniques. Auditory threshold increased significantly in the hypertensive group compared with controls (p < 0.05). There was a significant prolongation of absolute peak latencies of waves I, II and V and interpeak latency III-V. However, no significant difference was observed in the NCV between the hypertensives and controls. We conclude that there was a significant correlation of rise in systolic and diastolic blood pressure with absolute peak latencies of ABRs in hypertensive patients. However, no significant difference in nerve conduction velocity was seen.

[A neurophysiological study on neurotoxicity of 2,5-hexanedione. Auditory brainstem responses in rats].

Conduction disturbances in the central nervous system (CNS) of rats due to 2,5-hexanedione (2,5-HD) were examined, using auditory brainstem responses (ABRs). Ten male rats (Jcl-Wistar) were given subcutaneous injection of 2,5-HD of 300 mg/kg/day five days a week for three weeks. For the control group, ten male rats (Jcl-Wistar) were employed. One week after the last administration, ABRs in rats...

MRI measurement of the canine auditory pathways and relationship with brainstem auditory evoked responses.

The objective of this study was to determine direct measurements of auditory pathways by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during the growth period of healthy Beagles, and to discover how canine brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) latencies vary in relation to these MRI measurements. Eighty healthy Beagles were tested at eight, 16 and 52 weeks of age (stages 1, 2, 3, respectively) with BAE...

Auditory function and inner ear pathology in guinea pigs with peripheral nerve demyelination

The audiological or physiological data showed that auditory neuropathy was due to the demylination disease in peripheral nerve, especially in auditory nerve. The aim of this study was to explore the changes of auditory function and auditory nerve pathology through establishing a guinea pig model with demyelinated peripheral nerve. The guinea pig model was established by immunizing guinea pigs w...

AUDITORY BRAINSTEM RESPONSES (ABR) IN HYPERBILIRUBINEMIC NEWBORNS

To evaluate the changes of ABR values in hyperbilirubinemic newborns, 85 cases with severe jaundice (total bilirubin levels over 16 mg/dL and direct bilirubin less than 2 mg/dL) were selected from those admitted to Children's Medical Center by simple sampling method. These infants had no other problem except jaundice. ABR was taken before treatment in all cases and in some (10 cases) after...

Neonatal auditory brainstem response cannot reliably diagnose brainstem death.

In two newborn infants who had experienced severe asphyxial insults, and who showed noticeable signs of brainstem dysfunction, all components of the auditory brainstem response except the eighth nerve potential became undetectable. Both babies survived, their brainstem responses returned, and one of them is judged to be developmentally normal at the age of 18 months. Clinical signs of brainstem...
